A pressure-control valve installed at the top of a well. Depending on its design, a BOP can close around pipe, close an unobstructed bore, or shear specified tubulars and seal. Designs differ in size, pressure rating and closing mechanism.

Pipe installed in a well to support the borehole and separate geological formations. Casing is commonly cemented in place and forms part of the well structure. Its dimensions, material grade and connections are selected for the loads and well conditions.

Threaded tubular sections that connect surface drilling equipment to the bottomhole assembly. Drillpipe provides a flow path for drilling fluid and transmits the mechanical actions used to move and rotate the assembly and drill bit. The end connections are known as tool joints.
